About Us
Phoenix & the Bison is somewhat of an anti-band. Not as in the record label (that would be the dream, Andy, call us), but in the sense that we don't play shows, we don't have a weekly practice or jam space, and mostly it's been the two of us. We just love writing songs and making records. We both played in many bands before over the years, but wanting a higher ratio of time writing as opposed to playing, we started this as a recording project in 2010, and have been going strong for 16 years, mostly as a correspondence across the Atlantic.
Our process has been that Scott Foster (Phoenix) writes the initial parts, typically on guitar or piano, and listening to what the songs need, we add. Following the breadcrumbs, M.E.Foley adds a story and vocals, and sometimes drums and fuzz bass. We have friends in for more instrumentation, and for our Summum Bonum album we were fortunate to work with Brian Martin on drums, Matt Hawkes on keys and vocals, Bob Getman on lead guitar, Eric Klaxton on horns, Joe Harding on bass, Robbie Kneeland on drums, Matt Langley on bass, and Shane Watkins on vox.
We get so excited about writing that it takes us a decade to actually finish an album, but this has served the songs well in having longevity checks. We are currently working on A Fine Line, a collection of 32 chamber vignettes in 37 minutes, with more orchestral sounds.
